Ready to Play in the Dirt

January 2, 2010

On my list of projects to plan is our very first garden! It’s cold outside. 25 degrees and snow on the ground cold. But I missed the boat on a garden last summer because it was just too much with everything else that was higher on the importance list and a bit more demanding of my time and love. This year I can’t wait to get outside and get dirty. Knowing how long it takes me to actually get to projects that I plan, this one is getting started seriously ahead of time.

On the list:

  • Make sure that our compost pile is actually a pile of compost still when it thaws and continue to add to the pile.
  • Build our garden beds(obviously this will have to wait quite some time)
  • Pick what we want to plant and order seeds. I really want to order heirloom seeds, so I’m going to try to base what we choose to grow on what I can get locally(or relatively locally in comparison to across the country or multiple states away!) from sources I’m really excited to investigate.

Here’s the currently lonely and cold spot where we’ll have the garden:

So many more projects are going to need to happen when it gets warm again, but for now I’m excited about the thought of fresh herbs and tomatoes! And lots of dirt digging. And watching the plants grow along with my little ragamuffins. And watching them learn about and delight in the things that we plant and grow and nurture together. And eating delicious meals together from our own garden. And freezing even more and attempting canning(I know I’ll be over that one quickly as it happens, but I truly am already thankful this winter for all of the fresh produce I froze when it was so bountiful in the summer.)I know I’m completely romanticizing the idea, especially the part where I seriously CANNOT WAIT to get the little ones out there playing in the dirt, but right now I’m just fine with that:)

As Amelia would say, “I can’ wait! I just can’ wait mum mum!!”

We did the square foot gardening for the first time last year and really loved it … I’m hoping that we can REALLY get it going this year and get a ton of crops. Our compost is looking good already, so we’re just going to keep adding to it and hope for the best.

Can’t wait to follow along with this project!!

You’re going to have so much fun! I love our SFG, and it’s so easy to have the kids help plant seeds. 🙂

I order heirlooms from They have a great catalog.

Hi! Just found your comment on Clover Lane (I’m with you, 100%!) and had to stop over. 🙂 And…we did our first square foot garden last year. We actually didn’t strictly stick to the “square foot” thing, but we made the raised beds and had many successes and a few failures. Good luck to you! It’s SO much fun!!

Leave some love! (It always makes my day:)
