Confessions of a Clueless First Time Gardener

March 20, 2010

I’m stumbling my way through this garden starting and I honestly can’t believe it’s actually happening!

-Boxes are finished, using PW’s photo-accompanied instructions. They just need to be placed in their official spots. Thank you, Home Depot, for having scraps on sale for $1 each already cut to just the lengths we needed. It made life just a tiny bit easier and that’s always appreciated around here. The two taller boxes will be for veggies, the shorter box will be for mostly flowers and possibly herbs.

-A few seeds are actually started. {This batch didn’t go over too well – I forgot to take the lids off and they *may* have molded a bit and been thrown away…)

-Kid “seeds” were also planted {lentils}

-The planting didn’t last long. Bubble blowing lasted a whole lot longer. As did dirt eating…

  • All seeds have been purchased (mostly- I still want more flowers, but it’s harder to justify.)
  • I have almost complete *official* drawn plans of where each of our plants will go in each square foot of our beds(in case you’re not familiar with Square Foot Gardening, check out this site or this book to figure out what on earth I’m talking about.)
  • I also have a plan for staggering some of our planting to get a continual harvest through the season.
  • And a plan for growing our tomatoes, beans and melons vertically. I’m seriously excited about watching that one play out and actually work:)

Our day also included pizza for lunch, playing at the park,  grilling for dinner and just generally a whole lot of sunshine. I think we can officially go to sleep worn out and very, very happy. Happy Spring everyone!

      So true – I love to see all of these beginnings so much! And WHERE did you get the cute little labels??? They look like some sort of terra cota??

      He was looking around soooo innocently as if saying, “What? What? Why is Dad freaking out and why is Mom laughing at me??”

    Lillian~we’re right there with you! I don’t know what will end up happening, or how much we’ll harvest, but the amount of interest and excitement from Theo has already proven abundant. Fun! Love the pics in this post 🙂
    Happy Spring!
