Our Neighbor is Less Than Thrilled About Our Gardening

May 5, 2010

It might be a bit of an over statement, but she’s definitely not thrilled. She is a wealth of information, though – and I don’t even mean that sarcastically. Her yard is so full of plants that it’s incredible. Just not veggies. In fact, she told me yesterday that her husband is growing tomatoes, we just didn’t know because she makes him plant them where she won’t have to look at them (around the back of that big red barn structure thing that you see in a lot of my pictures.)

I’m assuming our overgrowth of produce this summer might not be her idea of “aesthetically pleasing,” especially since she asked what we had planted so far and I thought her eyes would fall out of her head. She asked if I was planning to set up a roadside produce stand in my front yard. I’m not, but I’d sure love to do a LOT of feeding of my family with the fruits of our labor.

This past weekend we got 2 of the 3 boxes filled and 2 blueberry bushes planted. We planted: 1 Cherokee Purple tomato plant, mammoth sugar peas, poblano and chili peppers, arugula, a mesclun mix, leeks, green onions,  kale, beets, carrots, potatoes and swiss chard. After a good soaking of steady rain Sunday night and monday, our arugula and mesclun lettuce are already sprouting!

Still to go in: dill, sage, chamomile, tarragon, lavender, rosemary, balm lemon, mint of some sort, basil, a whole lot of flowers and possibly a few other herbs if I get them this week, otherwise we’ll call it good.

This coming weekend(and this week, when I can get to it) we’re planning to dig up all of the existing landscaping in the front yard(it’s not a lot – at all), get the sunflower house planted, get a potato container started and/or try to convince John to build this great structure, get some more garden area dug out to plant some rows of melons and possibly pumpkins and get the last box of herbs and flowers planted.

p.s. Any regular Kombucha drinkers out there? I tried it once or twice a few years ago and remember not liking it, but I know it’s good for me like crazy, so I decided to get some again today. It’s more tart than I was expecting – are all flavors like that, or just the Citrus? I figured I can handle sipping it slowly all day today knowing it’s good for me, but are any of the other flavors a bit more sweet or a bit less tart and more like a plain tea?
