Bits of Summer

June 15, 2010

Black Raspberry Custard Pie with black raspberries that she picked in her backyard yesterday. They literally stopped me in my tracks because they were just so beautiful.

It took everything in me not to spend $9 for one, so instead I asked if she’d mind if I took a picture.

{This one is a black raspberry pie. I should have gotten another angle – it was GORGEOUS!}

It’s funny, I always feel so awkward asking people if I can take pictures of their things, especially at a market. 99% of the time they say, “Sure” with a shrug especially when I tell them I’m just trying to learn how to use my camera, but this woman was actually happy.  She wasn’t overly exuberant or anything, but she looked at me and said, “Oh! Would you email a picture to me?? These are my favorites and I never remember to take a picture.” Which proceeded into the loveliest conversation about gardens and raspberries and strawberries and keeping birds away by stringing up metal pie plates because the reflecting light deters them.

Today was just the ordinary day we were needing to get back on track. Great fruit and veggies early in the morning – strawberries, blueberries, apricots, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, honeydew and  apples. I got an insanely huge apple that I’m saving for a snack. We had a red-themed lunch of strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes and tomato & red pepper hummus sandwiches. We played with trains on the hardwood floors that feel so nice and cool in the heat. We pulled out new books. I actually got caught up on some laundry and cleaning. Had a good cup of coffee and a good cup of tea. And I’m re-reading a good book and it feels good. I’ve been needing to start a new book that makes me want to steal any possible little minutes here and there to keep up with the story.

    Holy hell! I WANT PIE!

    I didn’t know that about light. Do you think it detracts bunnies? Fing bunnies are a menace this year. I’m about to go all Mr. McGreggor on them. I think I’ll try it with some old scratched CDs.

Leave some love! (It always makes my day:)
