If you saw what I sent my kids to school in today, you might cringe a bit.  That’s cool. For once, that doesn’t make me feel like a terrible mom.  I’m not cringing, it just wasn’t worth the fight today.  It was sloooooow going getting out the door this morning and other parenting challenges had to take precedence, like getting her hair brushed so that it didn’t vaguely resemble a lion’s mane and making sure that they were fed and warm.  The rest?  Well, minor details.  And the further I get into this whole parenting gig, the more I realize how much grace it takes just to do the basics on a daily basis.  Anyone care to join me in just being happy with completely the basic necessities on a daily basis?? It feels like we’re all craving every possible ounce of authenticity lately.  Mostly to be able to relate and connect on a heart level rather than on a competitive level.  This post  hits the nail on the head.

In an unexpected turn of events, it snowed last tonight.  One last hurrah for winter before spring creeps in.  Nothing major, but just enough to make the kids happy and to make snow angels and to lay in bed for a few extra minutes before putting them to bed, enjoying the daylight savings time extra light with the pretty snow falling as we alternated between snuggles and quips like, “Hey, Mia, your new name is ballies!!” (As in, yes, balls, like you’re likely thinking. They’re well-behaved like that.) And other such mature topics like poop and discussions of Clementine and Eloise and Little Nutbrown Hare and what’s going to happen next year when Mia gets to eat lunch with her friends at school and Nick stays home and eats lunch with me.  You know, the norm.

In other news: Rita‘s is open, which makes it officially spring, and I found ranch-flavored veggie “chips” that I canNOT stop eating.

Some link love:

  • Phyllis Grant, will you be my best friend? I promise to pay in kale and lots of other garden goodness(assuming I can get it all to grow this year.)  Thank you. I love you.
  • Kristen Kalp’s Change the World, Dammit! is rocking my world right now.  If you’re a business owner, or just want to start a project in your life to add some more meaningfulness, run to get the sample and sign up to find out when the official book is released!  It’s all sorts of constructive inspiration that makes me want to take every pipe dream I’ve ever had and run with it! The best part: She makes me feel empowered to ACTUALLY DO IT, not just think about doing it.
  • This is officially just my kind of birthday party. “I’m sorry, I’m just not a party mom. I planned no games. I planned no decorations. I didn’t even make a cake because he requested one from DQ.” WORD.
  • This post hits home in 5 zillion sorts of ways.  “I am working on allowing all the parts of me to play together–the mother, the writer, the wife, the activist. Who had this idea of compartmentalizing womanhood? I believe in the act of bleeding lines, we are many things all at once–even in dormancy.”

I feel like I have so much more to say this week, but it will have to wait for another day.  If I start, I’ll fall down the rabbit hole and take forever and keep “working on” the post for days and I’d rather not do that.  I’d rather say hi today, how are YOU? What’s happening in your world? Send me a link if you’ve blogged it – I’d love to see!  Also, I just realized that it’s almost my 1 year Instagram anniversary – that’s crazy. Come play along and follow me if you’re on there – I’m @lillianranauro.
